Family Portraits at the UCLA Botanical Garden

Growing up just a few miles from UCLA, I somehow never visited the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Gardens while I was a kid. I was excited to go there with a friend and her family over a year ago (hey, I’m still catching up with blog posts over here!) for a family session in the California sunshine.

From bamboo forests to native desert plants, this garden has a variety of landscapes to explore and enjoy, and two-year-old C. loved romping through it all in her party dress. Enjoy this smiling family!

Though I’m based in Seattle, I’m in L.A. to visit family all the time, so think of me for photo things down here, too!

Family fall fun, and Augie at (almost) 21 months

Can we all agree that fall, and Halloween, are the best? This fall we had a ton of fun with Augie, now almost 21 months, at Craven Farm, picking out pumpkins, playing on trucks and tractors, visiting animals, and enjoying the weather. His BFF Logan makes an appearance in these photos, too – Logan and his family are moving just a few blocks away from us and I am so excited that these boys will be growing up together!

At 21 months, Augie talks up a storm. His comprehension and vocabulary astound me! His loves remain trucks (really, anything with wheels), books, balls, and stuffed animals. He loves his music class and a kids gymnastics class, but is equally happy driving cars around our house.

For Halloween, my sister made him an owl costume. It is the most beautiful thing ever and August was adorable in it. He spent the whole day saying, “Whoo whooooo,” “trick-or-treat,” “happy Halloween,” and “búho costume!” (Búho is Spanish for owl.) Halloween also gave us the opportunity to sport a family costume with Tyler as the tree, me as the nest, and Augs as our little búho – and we have a little family announcement to make, as well, about what’s in momma owl’s nest these days … scroll to the bottom of the post to find out!

Seattle Family Photos – Bennett at 18 Months

As a family photographer, I get a lot of questions from clients about where their photo shoots should take place. While a super-picturesque location can provide an amazing backdrop, sometimes the best place for photos can be found while simply strolling around your own neighborhood. For Bennett’s 18 month and fall family photos, we stuck close to home, walking around Seattle’s Capitol Hill, and ended up in his very own living room. The results are fantastic! Happy 18 months, Bennett. You are a lover of leaves and apples, books and blocks, and your “surprise” face is absolutely adorable!

Seattle Family Photos: Theo!

It’s springtime in Seattle, but a few months ago, a slightly drizzly winter day didn’t stop us from having a wonderful shoot with eighteen-month-old Theo and his family! We met at their lovely home and had such fun. Theo is such a joyful boy; we enjoyed reading, playing with the dog, snack time, and general silliness. Take a look at this exuberant little monkey and his lovely parents!

August: One Year Old

And here we are, baby August is one. There’s nothing I can say about being a new parent that hasn’t already been said; all of the clichés are true. There is pain and joy and seething at the monitor when the baby squawks at 3:30am and a melting heart when he gives you your first real hug. There is frustration when he throws all of his food on the floor (again) and laughter when he beams up at you from the bath, feet kicking in the warm water. It is hard and it is fun and it is full of love.

Our boy is walking, practically running, loves anything and everything with wheels, has eight teeth in that cute little mouth, and loves all animals. He knows what he likes (light switches, refrigerator magnets, stairs, drinking water from a straw) and what he doesn’t (mostly the washing machine). He’s around 50th percentile for height and weight, but 90th for head circumference (that’s our little bobble-head!) and healthy as can be, fortunately. And here he is, at Grammy’s house in L.A. for his first birthday, wearing a crown, because I just couldn’t resist!

Augie’s birthday party was circle-themed – he is obsessed with everything circular. My sister made wonderful decorations because she is the craftiest among us, and my mom orchestrated a spread of circular foods for us all to enjoy (melon balls, grapes, caprese skewers, cucumber sandwiches, meatballs, pizza bagel bites, mini-quiches, and various circular candies), while I attempted a three-tiered cake for the adults and a giant cupcake for August. Was it the best idea to try to do a complicated cake like that for the first time the morning of the party? Perhaps not, but I don’t think it looks too, too much like a Pinterest fail … I hope … it was delicious, regardless. We had a wonderful lunch in the backyard (that’s February in Southern California!) and the obligatory one-year-old cake smash. August was a bit overwhelmed with his cupcake (it’s probably the biggest piece of food he’s ever been presented with in his life!), but with some encouragement from Grammy, he quickly got into it. Enjoy our photos of the big day – happy birthday, August!

Los Angeles Family Holiday Photos

I was thrilled to get an email from an old friend, a woman I spent five months in Spain with almost a decade ago. I was even happier when she told me she had married the boyfriend who had visited her in Spain (just as I eventually married my then-boyfriend, too!) and they now lived in Los Angeles with their one-year-old daughter. Since I am always going back and forth to LA to visit my family, we were able to make a plan for me to take their family photos during my December visit! It was wonderful to see them all again and meet their little girl. She is a cutie-pie, as you can see:

We made sure to take a few photos of Mom and Dad alone, too (with an adoring onlooker peering through the glass doors!) – it’s always important to remember yourselves as a couple, even in your new roles, right?

Seattle Family Holiday Photos at the Conservatory at Volunteer Park

The holiday season gives me the warm and fuzzies in general, but I especially love capturing young families! Babies and kids are only small for a short time and it’s so wonderful to help families remember that special time. I went with 11 month old Zachary and his parents to the Conservatory at Volunteer Park in Seattle for a little holiday session. It was during Seattle’s recent cold snap and it was such a treat to bathe ourselves in the tropical temperatures in the greenhouse! Zachary is such a cute little guy, as you can plainly see, and we had a blast. Happy holidays!

August at 6 Months Old

We are celebrating a whole half year with our little guy! It has been both the fastest and shortest six month period in my life … someone said to me that life with a baby is “the longest shortest time” and I could not agree more. Everything has changed for us since August’s arrival in February. EVERYTHING. And it has been difficult (sleeplessness is so hard!) and it has been wonderful (baby giggles are the best!) and life is so contradictory, but I wouldn’t change a thing.

We’ve been in Seattle for two months now and I think we are finally finding our groove. We have some mom friends, we have some baby friends, we got a car so we can get around, we actually go out and DO get around …! Things are going well.

Through it all, Augie has been and is an amazing baby. He definitely has his likes and dislikes (loves to nurse, hates trying solids so far, loves the bath, hates naps, loves being in the carrier with me, hates bottles) but is far more flexible than we give him credit for and has a great disposition. He handled a trip to Italy like a champ, napping on the go, charming Italians everywhere we traveled. Back at home, he is still a rolling-boy extraordinaire, going all ways over and over and getting across the room with a combo of rolling and scooting on his stomach. He is soooooo close to crawling; he gets up on his knees, rocks back and forth, and even moves a knee or two forward, only to fall forward on his face since he hasn’t figured out how to coordinate his arms with it. He can almost sit on his own, as well, and two teeth have popped through! So much is happening! Even with all the action, Augie is consistently our laughing, smiling guy who alternates between pure happiness and stoic observation, staring at everything intently. He takes it ALL in.

So, without further ado, here is the boy himself at six months old!

My Life: 9 Months Pregnant

As you may know, I am about to have a baby (see my prego progression here)! It is an incredibly exciting time and one I love capturing and sharing with images for others. My due date is TOMORROW, and I had been thinking of getting my own maternity photos done professionally for quite some time … I always talk about and truly believe that it is so important to celebrate these fleeting and essential life experiences, so I should do my own, too, right? So I called up one of my very best friends and one of the most talented photographers I know, Tara Lynn Sen, and we set out last Saturday for a pre-baby celebrations shoot!

We froze our patooties off tramping around Larz Anderson Park in Brookline in February, but it was totally and completely worth it! I know my husband and I will cherish these photographs forever (and that he is an incredibly good sport to put up with me and my wardrobe selections for him …). While I do not recommend waiting until the week of your due date to have maternity photographs taken (too risky!), I wholeheartedly recommend the experience!

All photographs are by the incomparable Tara Lynn Sen. Thank you, thank you, a million times thank you!

A Snowy Boston Family Session

From sunny/foggy California to wintery Boston, a family session is always a blast! I met up with four-year-old Madison and two-year-old Tyler and their parents in the Public Garden for a pre-holidays romp in the snow. We got a little chilly, but still have a great time!
